Greenstone Vermont slate three color blend installed on North Carolina residence using the SlateTec installation system
For this residential re-roof project in North Carolina, three genuine Vermont slate colors were selected and sourced from Greenstone Slate quarries in Vermont. The 26 squares of random-width slates were installed using the SlateTec lightweight installation method. The SlateTec lightweight genuine slate roof system is an innovative approach to installing a genuine slate roof which can reduce the weight of the roof to under six pounds per square foot.
The three-color slate blend consists of two semi-weathering slates: 40% of the slates were Vermont Clear Gray and another 40% were Semi-weathering Gray / Green. Over time the varying mineral content of the semi-weathering slate may cause some to exhibit earth tones while others will remain the original color. The final 20% of the slates installed were Non-weathering Purple which adds richness to the overall appearance. Two slate grades were blended in a 50/50 mix: Standard Grade Rough Texture (1/4″-3/8″) and Architectural Grade (3/8″-1/2″).
The natural slate roof is further complemented by copper accents. For this residence, copper was used on the window casings, dormer roofs, and the chimney flashing and cap. Copper has been used on slate roofs for thousands of years for its aesthetic appearance and longevity.
