Vermont Clear Gray Slate Roof Installation on Colonial-style Residence in Massachusetts using SlateTec reduced weight installation system

Greenstone’s Vermont Clear Gray roofing slate was selected for this colonial-style residence in Amherst, Massachusetts. Vermont Clear Gray is a semi-weathering hard-vein slate. It was selected because of its classic gray slate color and its semi-weathering properties. Semi-weathering slates mostly keep their light to medium shades of gray but 10-20% of them will exhibit additional shades of buff as they weather, adding color richness and contributing to the unique one-of-a-kind appearance for which genuine slate roofs are known.

The project used 32 squares of 12″ x random-width standard-grade slates, installed using the SlateTec lightweight installation method. SlateTec is an innovative approach to installing a genuine slate roof that reduces overall roof weight by 40%. SlateTec makes a slate roof a competitive upgrade for worn-out cedar shake and even asphalt roofs because no extra structural support is needed in most cases. SlateTec’s system uses a very rugged—and patented— HDPE interlayment that enables a change in how the slates are applied. With SlateTec, far less slate overlap is needed which means fewer slates (typically 40%) are needed to complete the roof. Less slate lowers the roof weight yet there is no visual difference when compared to a traditionally installed slate roof. And all the traditional slate roof options are available including random widths, color blends, dropdowns, and staggers.
