While all Vermont slate is premium slate…
A Greenstone® HailFire™ slate roof stands up to severe weather and climate conditions like no other because it is “the best of the best“.
Unsurpassed performance in roofing by every measure!
HailFire™ roof performance goes well beyond its well-deserved, highest industry ratings — qualifications that other materials might just barely meet. The natural physical characteristics of Vermont slate is the basis of a HailFire roof. Only natural stone could provide these benefits:
- ASTM-S1 quality – far exceeds the highest available slate rating for strength and longevity.
- FM 4473 Class 4 – It more than meets the highest class rating for hail impact resistance. It’s in a class by itself!
- Miami-Dade approved for use in hurricane zones.
- “Walkable” after installation.
- Installs traditionally or with SlateTec™ lightweight installation system for slate (see below).
Superior impact resistance: The rigidity and density of premium Greenstone HailFire™ slate gives it extraordinary resistance to hail and other types of impacts. The Greenstone Vermont slate used in HailFire™ (see below table) has been lab-tested to repel 2-inch hail weighing 0.3 lbs traveling 120MPH, well beyond the ASTM Class 4 rating level.
100% Fireproof: It’s just a fact: Like all slate, it is stone. It simply does not burn.
The 100-year roof! Beyond the prestigious ASTM S-1, 75-year life expectancy rating, the slate in a HailFire roof is backed by Greenstone’s 100-year warranty.
Waterproof: Greenstone HailFire slates are virtually impervious to water.
Unaffected by temperature extremes and moisture: From the hot southern summer sun to the coldest day of a northern winter, a HailFire roof will not appreciably expand, contract, warp, discolor (other than natural weathering of some colors) or be otherwise affected.
Reducing the weight of a Greenstone® Hailfire™ roof
Install it using the SlateTec™ slate installation system for up to a
40% reduction in roof weight
A HailFire™ slate roof weighs less — not because the slate itself weighs less — it’s because it uses less slate! The SlateTec™ installation system makes this possible because SlateTec’s interlayment reduces the amount of overlap (technically known as headlap) that traditional slate installations require. Therefore, less slate is needed, reducing the overall weight of the roof compared to a traditional slate installation.
Extended protection: A HailFire roof installed using SlateTec has an additional layer of protection because it is installed using SlateTec’s “interlayment” layer that protects the integrity of the deck even if a slate is damaged or missing.
Independent lab tests confirm that SlateTec’s interlayment achieves a Class 3 impact rating by itself. In addition, SlateTec interlayment “cushions” the slate, enhancing the slate’s impact resistance.

Slate is not only rugged, it is considered one of the world’s most beautiful roofs
Slate’s extended life expectancy and durability create an overall low cost of ownership. That’s why it is frequently the choice for fine residences but also for institutional applications such as colleges, churches and government buildings.
